Letter To The Community

Making Stone Soup

We recently completed a new neighborhood park on the east side of Pilot Butte State Park. This park, like so many others, is an example of community partnership. The land, owned by Oregon State Parks, is located in a heavily populated area that was in need of a neighborhood park. Through an agreement with Oregon State Parks we were able to add a playground and shelter to an existing park rather than to acquire property elsewhere. Since Pilot Butte State Park did not have playground equipment or a shelter, the addition of the neighborhood park created a spectacular place for people of all ages and many interests.

Your park and recreation district is committed to partnerships that share common values and benefit taxpayers by assuring wise use of tax dollars and more efficient use of resources. The list of things that happen in our community because of partnerships is long. Parks, trails, and open spaces are often the result of public or private partnerships. Here are just a few examples of partnerships that you may not be aware of: Many of the recreation programs in this guide would not be possible without the Bend-La Pine School District providing facilities to support our shared commitment to healthy families. Many other programs in the guide are offered by non-profit or private businesses that have the facilities or talent to offer the program. The park district owns the Old Bend Gym and rents it out to the Boys and Girls Club for $1 per year to help ensure the services of the club continue. A partnership with the Bend Police Department helps keep your parks safe by providing a patrol officer dedicated to parks. And, many non-profits and government agencies use the new district office community room free of charge for their meetings which saves taxpayer dollars.

In order to provide meaningful service to our community during difficult economic times, agencies such as the park and recreation district must continue to seek out successful partnerships. Reliance on these partnerships makes us stronger and helps to build community. We believe that the future of park and recreation will be as much about facilitating others in offering recreation opportunities as it will be about providing the service ourselves.
